Self-Portrait Pixilation

Made this in my Stop-Motion class, Spring 2011. The assignment was to make a self-portrait from a pixilation. I chose to show my nerdy love of the Harry Potter universe. :)

I finally got around to adding sound/music to it recently. Back when I made the animation, I imagined it with the song that features in it. But now that I've put it together, I'm not sure if I should keep it in there. Too cheesy maybe? :) If anyone has an opinion, let me know. Thanks!

Music credit goes to the wizard rock band, The Remus Lupins.

I also give credit to my old roommate Amanda McMicken who lent me her wand. :P Now I have my own from Ollivanders. :D

These are some environment sketches that Sarah Kujubu drew for our thesis.  I only take credit for the color.  :)

Thesis characters

Hi.

...Sorry, sorry, sorry I was MIA for several months. :(   Everyone keeps reminding me that I should update, so here I go!

Had a great summer, went to SIGGRAPH in Vancouver, and had a busy first semester of senior year!  That pretty much sums up my life since May in one sentence, I think.  :)

Here are a couple of character model sheets for my thesis.  I'm collaborating with Sarah Kujubu.  Not sure how much we want to reveal about our story before our show (especially since our story has changed so much since the beginning!), but I for one want to keep it a mystery I think. >.> I'll show some progress every now and then though. So here are the two characters I designed (check out Sarah's blog too for her stuff!).

Character Design Final: Dream Navy

For my final in Character Design this past semester, we had to choose one of 6 themes and create 8-10 characters based on that theme, taking that theme any way we wanted.  I chose Naval Empire and decided to create a navy in a Dream Land that controls the dreams and nightmares of the Waking World.  I was kind of inspired by... sleep deprivation... haha.

So I created four naval characters and four nightmare characters.  Here they are:

The Captain.  Usually pretty grumpy and strict/stern.  Takes his job super seriously.

The 1st Lieutenant.  Pretty much the opposite of the Captain.  Jovial, calm, makes jokes out of everything, even in serious situations.

The 2nd Lieutenant.  The tallest in the navy and pretty tough.  Tiny detail, but fun fact: She also has a very loud voice due to the ear plugs always lodged in her ears (I was inspired by the ear plugs that Audrey Hepburn wears in Breakfast at Tiffany's when I was Image Googling sleeping masks).

A Midshipman.  Pretty laid back kind of guy.  In fact, the whole navy is pretty chill except for the Captain.  But they get the job done. :)

Clown.  A pretty common nightmare, but clowns are one of my biggest fears. Needless to say, it creeped me out just drawing this thing... >.<  And doing image Google searches of clowns for reference was actually a bad idea--I had to stop immediately, haha...

An evil bunny.  This might seem weird but there's a story behind it.   Basically when I turned 8 years old, I got a vintage-type bunny plush doll for my birthday (not intended to be a kids toy but one for display).  That night, I had a terrible dream that it came to life and threatened to kill me.  Woke up, threw it out of my bed.  And I've been terrified of it ever since.  Fortunately, my mom sold it a flea market a few years later.

Drowning.  I think that's a pretty common fear too.  But I once had a nightmare that my brother drowned in the ocean.  :/

Falling.  I have a huge fear of falling.  I struggled to depict the idea of "falling" into a character, so I did my best to incorporate some flying themes (skeleton wings of a bat, aviator goggles, "parachute" pants) in a creepy character. So yeah, I will NEVER go skydiving or anything like that...
So that's it!

Also, one of the main things I focused on was avoiding the use of paper textures, which I've become pretty dependent on.  Any feedback on my coloring method without paper textures is especially appreciated! :)

Flushing Fish - Stop-Motion Final

Sand animation that I did for my Stop-Motion final.
